Feeling Like You're Not Good Enough? Here's How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

Have you ever caught yourself wondering…
“Am I doing enough?”
“What if I’m not as experienced as everyone else?”
“How do other support providers make this all look so easy?”

If those thoughts sound familiar, you’re certainly not alone.

Many independent NDIS support workers and providers experience imposter syndrome at some point in their working life. Whether you’ve been supporting clients for six months or six years, it’s surprisingly common to question yourself (even when you’re doing a wonderful job!)

The truth is, those doubts rarely tell the whole story. So let’s take a peek inside how it works in your mind, and how to overcome impostor syndrome.

How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome as an NDIS Sole Trader

What Is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is that nagging feeling that you’re not quite good enough, even when there’s plenty of evidence to suggest otherwise. It can leave you believing your success is simply luck, or worrying that one day someone will discover you don’t have all the answers.

But here’s something worth remembering…
No one has all the answers.

Every experienced support worker, therapist, support coordinator, provider or aged carer started exactly where you might be now…learning as they went. Even the most experienced NDIS providers can often get stumped.

Running a Business Can Add to the Pressure

When you’re an independent provider, you’re not just supporting clients. You’re also managing appointments, invoices, expenses, paperwork, emails, service agreements and everything else that comes with running a small business. That’s a lot for one person.

It’s easy to mistake feeling overwhelmed for not being capable. They’re not the same thing. Often the problem isn’t you. It’s simply that you’re trying to wear too many hats.

Remember Why You Started

Most people don’t choose disability support because you want to become experts in administration. I’m sure you’ve chosen this field it because you genuinely care about helping people live more independent, fulfilling lives. You care.

Your kindness.
Your patience.
Your willingness to listen.
Your reliability.

These are the qualities your clients remember long after the paperwork is finished.

Stop Comparing Your Chapter Two to Someone Else's Chapter Twenty

Social media has a funny way of making everyone else’s business look effortless. You see the fully booked calendars, glowing testimonials and polished websites. What you don’t see are the late nights, difficult conversations, mistakes, or moments of self-doubt they’ve experienced along the way.

Instead of comparing yourself to someone else’s journey, take a moment to recognise how far you’ve already come.

Growth deserves celebrating too. Remember that learning is powerful if you keep doing it. You don’t need to know everything, but stay curious. Ask questions; get further training in specific areas; learn from others; keep up to date with NDIS changes; be organised in your business admin work. This signals you’re committed to giving your clients the very best support you can.

Overcome Impostor Syndrome

The next time self-doubt creeps in, pause for a moment. Think about:

  • the client who smiled because of something you did
  • the family who trusts you
  • the thank you message you received
  • the little wins you’ve helped someone achieve

These moments matter. In fact, they’re the best reminder that you’re making a genuine difference. You might even like to keep a folder of kind messages or positive feedback to revisit on the tougher days. It’s amazing what a little reminder can do.

You Don't Have to Do Everything Alone

Running your own business doesn’t mean you have to figure everything out by yourself.

Whether it’s asking another provider for advice, working with a trusted accountant, or using tools that simplify your admin, getting support isn’t a weakness. It’s a smart business decision.

That’s one of the reasons Earni was created.

Not because support workers & providers need to work harder, but because you deserve a little support too. By simplifying things like client management, invoices, expenses and service agreements, Earni helps take some of the pressure off running your business, so you can focus on what you do best – supporting your clients.

Your clients are looking for someone who listens, shows up, keeps learning, and genuinely cares. Not perfection. And that’s something no amount of self-doubt can take away. 💜
